It looks now as if the preferred sinking of the Adelaide will be mid October 2009. Les and I attended a meeting of commercially interested people along with about 45 others. The information is that everything is progressing smoothly.
The Environmental Impact Studies is one of the things that is going to take a lot of time and work - approximately 10 months - but it is better to be safe than sorry. Certainly all departments involved are really excited about this project and you could feel their excitement throughout the meeting. Will keep you posted as further information comes to hand.
October was a milestone for us - the dive shop turned 40. Yes we opened our doors on the October long weekend 1968. " leave the rest of that page but take out the bit - "To coincide with our birthday - lucky enough to get some more this season.
We would like to say thank you to all our friends, customers, and wholesalers who have stuck with us over the years - we have been very privileged to know you all, and keep the grandchildren coming , but do not leave it too long - do not think we will be here for another 40years!! in-spite of our fantastic Dive Cons, Boat Drivers and Shop Hands who have eased our load.
A very special thank you must go to Steve Merrett our very patient and quietly suffering webmaster who does a fantastic job sorting out the sometimes pages of never ending information sent to him and chasing us up when things need changing or updating.

S.S. President Coolidge Dive Trip at Vanuatu
Twelve lucky people went over to Santo in Vanuatu to dive the wreck of the President Coolidge - now this is a wreck and a half. She lies on her side - the bow in 18 metres and the stern in 60. She went from a ship carrying 1000's of crew and army personal to The best wreck dive in the world in just 11/2 hours with everything left onboard for the diver to see.

Alan Power from Santo Dive Tours has been looking after the wreck for over 38 years and is the most respected operator. Check out the report in this Winter newsletter. We are also planning another trip away there. We are also looking to do one to the Solomon Islands , details to be organized. If interested in any of these please let us have your name so details can be sent to you. Gary Peters has shared his impressions of this year's trip with us - photos by Linda Robinson. Read it here

Recent Diving
The Diving so far has been good and the water temperature is still 19 degrees. The visibility has been good an average of 10 - 20 metres with a couple of 40 metre dives out wide where you could see the divers on the bottom.
What will you need to Dive the Adelaide ?
Around the top of the wreck and generally outside, your open water cert will be ok. If you want to penetrate and also go down to the bottom which could be around 35m if the site is finalised where we think it will be, an advanced certificate would be a good idea. If she is stripped like the Brisbane , there are no areas where you are light locked out but very nearly. Then a more intense wreck diver cert could be advisable.
We will be running all of these types of courses during Autumn and Winter and don't forget these forthcoming months are usually the best for diving so lets make this Autumn and Winter the time to improve your diving skills. As always, our courses are in open water so you will having great dives at the same time

Navigation: this is the depth at which you don't want to get lost

Marine life. A knowledge of what is on the seabed around you can make your diving come alive. If you are into underwater photography as many people are, you need to know just what is filling the viewfinder
SSI has a programme to encourage all recreational divers to aim for the master diver status. Like all SSI programmes this is based around experience. Plus appropriate training.
What is a master diver? It's diver who has at least 50 dives or more under their wt. belt, has done the advanced diver certificate on the way through and has also become a stress rescue diver.
So what do you end up with? A diver who really knows his stuff, is well trained and with a good level of experience but who is not expected and is perhaps not wanting to take on the added role of looking after beginners and the legal hassles this can lead too.
